Momming Quizzers

I have a confession. I am THE WORST at getting my kids to memorize scripture, whether it's for the small group classes on Sundays or the quiz team on Wednesdays. We just don't devote the time to it that we should.
And I have no excuse. I know the benefit of maximizing all those young-mind neurons and memory capabilities. And being able to pull those treasured words from your heart in any and every situation. I went to Lutheran school so memorizing the Bible was part of our daily curriculum.  And I'm the church children's director for goodness sake!
Our church just began participating in Nazarene Children's Quizzing. This is a denomination wide program designed to give kids an in-depth knowledge of particular areas of scripture. This year, for example, the kids are spending eight months memorizing scripture from and building an understanding of the book of Acts. Then, every two months they have the opportunity to compete against kids from around the district. I'm not particularly motivated by competition, so it took me some time to warm up to the concept. But, many of our kids LOVE competition. You DO NOT want to play four-square with them unless you own a helmet. While our team is striving hard to help them separate the concept of achievement from their faith, we believe the value of memorizing scripture is immeasurable. And if enjoying time together and making a sport out of it gets that accomplished, I'm on board! So far I feel the kids participating in the team are enjoying and learning from it. And, our coaches are such positive influences in their lives.
So back to my dropping the ball as a quiz mom...
Life has gotten a little out-of-control lately. Kids' school, my school, quiz team, life groups and fall baseball all started at almost the exact same time. And people around here keep insisting on eating and wearing clean clothes. S last week I found a little spot of time and spent a day or so in problem solving mode. Unhappy with the way the front yard looked? I hired a yard guy. Couldn't remember the last time I washed the drapes in the kitchen all of a sudden?  Of course I had to wash ALL of the drapes. Suddenly realizing my boys haven't been studying their quiz lessons? I. Got. On. That. Like. A. Boss.
I came up with a few games or tasks that they had to play before they could move on to other things like snack, t.v. or video games. They didn't hate it!
So I thought I'd share.

Two of these were a classic word scramble type activity.

I also did this puzzle with the words on the back. They had to put it in order before turning on the t.v.

And the most fun we had was with the Dr. Digalot (quiz mascot) version of Uno. When given a "draw" card, the player had opportunity to answer one of the quiz questions to avoid drawing.

I'm working on putting some more novel ideas. Maybe Dr. Digalot needs a candy-land or Monopoly version? What helps you teach your children scripture? I'd love to hear your suggestions!
